How We Create Our Tests

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Every test, worksheet and grammar guide on PDFTests is our own work. This page explains how we make them and how we check that they are correct, so teachers and learners know what they can rely on.

1. Planning by level and topic

We start from a plan for each language that lists the grammar topics, vocabulary areas and reading text types that learners meet at each CEFR level, from A1 to C2. Each test focuses on one topic at one level, so a learner who searches for “past simple A2” gets exactly that – not a mix of unrelated questions.

2. Writing with the help of AI

Our tests and worksheets are written with the help of AI language models, following detailed instructions for each level: which structures and vocabulary are allowed, how many questions each part has, how distractors must work and how explanations should be phrased. Every question comes with a short explanation of the correct answer.

3. Independent answer checking

Writing a question is not enough – it has to have exactly one correct answer. After a test is written, a separate checking step solves the whole test without seeing the answer key. Its answers are then compared with the key:

  • If they match, the question is accepted.
  • If they do not match, or the checker is unsure, the question is flagged, rewritten and checked again.
  • Automatic checks also catch duplicate options, missing gaps and formatting problems.

For worksheets with open answers, the same check makes sure that every reasonable correct answer is accepted by the online version – for example both didn’t and did not.

4. Review before publishing

Anything that is still flagged after the second check is reviewed and corrected by hand before the test goes online. Tests are then published as print-ready A4 PDFs and as online versions with instant marking.

5. Reader reports and updates

No process is perfect. Every test, worksheet and guide has a “Report a mistake” button. Reports go straight to our editors, and we correct the page and the PDF. Pages show the date of their last update.

Translations

The explanations, instructions and page texts are available in English, German, Spanish and French. The questions themselves always stay in the language being tested.
