The four Use of English tasks

Our tests practise all four task types. In the tests every item is multiple choice, so they can be marked online and on paper; the worksheets practise the same tasks with open answers, as in the exam.

  1. 1

    Multiple-choice cloze

A short text with gaps. For each gap you choose the word or phrase that fits – the options differ in collocation, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs or shades of meaning.

    Example: She finally ___ a decision. → A did · B made · C took · D got
    Answer: B made

  2. 2

    Open cloze

A text with gaps for grammar words: articles, prepositions, auxiliaries, pronouns, linkers and parts of fixed expressions. You write one word in each gap.

Example: He has lived here ___ he was a child.
    Answer: since

  3. 3

    Word formation

Sentences with a gap and a stem word in capitals. You change the word with prefixes and suffixes so it fits the gap – often a noun, adjective, adverb or a negative form.

Example: It was a very ___ choice. (WISE)
    Answer: unwise

  4. 4

    Key word transformation

You complete a second sentence so it means the same as the first, using a given key word without changing it – usually in two to five words.

Example: I haven’t seen him for years. (LAST) → It is years ___ him.
    Answer: since I last saw

Which level matches which exam?

Our tests are original exam-style practice written for PDFTests – not official Cambridge material. They follow the CEFR levels of these exams:

LevelExam at this levelPractise in our tests
B1 Cambridge B1 Preliminary (PET) Multiple-choice cloze and open cloze (Reading parts 5–6)
B2 Cambridge B2 First (FCE) All four tasks (Reading and Use of English parts 1–4)
C1 Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) All four tasks (Reading and Use of English parts 1–4)
C2 Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) All four tasks (Reading and Use of English parts 1–4)

How to prepare

  • Read the whole text once before you fill any gap – many answers depend on the sentence before or after.
  • Look at the words on both sides of the gap: collocations (make a decision), dependent prepositions (interested in) and fixed phrases decide most multiple-choice items.
  • In word formation, first decide which word class the gap needs, then check whether it must be plural, negative or comparative.
  • In key word transformations, never change the key word, count your words, and remember that contractions count as two words.
  • Practise against the clock: in the exam you have roughly one minute per item.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official Cambridge Use of English tests?

No. They are original exam-style tests written and checked by PDFTests. They practise the same task types at the same CEFR level, but no question is taken from a real exam paper.

Do the PDFs include the answers?

Yes. Every PDF has an answer key with a short explanation for each item, and every test can also be done online with instant marking.

Which level should I start with?

If you are not sure, take the free online level test first. It estimates your CEFR level in about 20 minutes and points you to the right tests.

Can teachers use the tests in class?

Yes – they are free for personal and classroom use. With the test builder you can also mix questions from several tests into your own printable test.
