Notes for teachers

Part 1 checks a and an. Learners often choose by spelling instead of sound, for example 'a hour' or 'an university'. Part 2 practises 'the' for second mention and in fixed phrases, and Part 3 covers places where English uses no article, such as countries, months, 'go home', 'by bus' and 'watch TV'. As a follow-up, ask learners to write five sentences about their day using at least one a, one an, one the and one phrase with no article.
