About this test

Free A1 worksheet on English articles a, an and the: first and second mention, jobs, unique things, negatives and questions. Answers included.

Topics covered

a vs anthe for known thingsArticles with jobsUnique things (the sun, the moon)Negatives and questions

Notes for teachers

Start by saying words aloud (apple, umbrella, university, hour) so learners notice that a/an depends on the first sound, not the first letter. Common mistakes are leaving out the article with jobs (He is engineer) and repeating a instead of using the on second mention. As a follow-up, ask learners to describe their room: 'There is a bed. The bed is blue.'
