A Fridge for Everyone

In the small town of Westbrook, there is a big white fridge outside the community centre. It is not a normal fridge. Anyone can put food in it, and anyone can take food out. It is free!

The idea came from Grace Okafor, a 28-year-old nurse. "I saw that shops and families often throw away good food," she says. "At the same time, some people in our town don't have enough to eat. I wanted to help with both problems."

The fridge opened two years ago. Now about forty people use it every day. Local bakeries bring bread in the evening, and families bring fruit and vegetables from their gardens. There are some rules: you cannot leave meat or fish, and all food must have a date on it.

A group of volunteers checks the fridge three times a day and cleans it every morning. "People are very kind," says Grace. "Sometimes they leave little notes with the food, like 'Enjoy your lunch!' It makes me smile."

  1. What is the best title for the article?

  2. Why did Grace start the fridge?

  3. What is Grace's job?

  4. Which of these can people NOT leave in the fridge?

  5. What do the volunteers do every morning?

  6. "Local bakeries bring bread in the evening." Here, "local" means:

  7. How does Grace feel about the people who use the fridge?

Parte 3: Un relato

Lee el relato sobre el primer día de un chico en un colegio nuevo. Después responde a las preguntas 15-20.

Felix's First Day

On Monday morning, Felix walked into his new school for the first time. His family moved to the city last week, and he didn't know anyone. The building was very big.

After the first lesson, Felix looked at his timetable. His next lesson was Art in Room 24, but he couldn't find it. He went up the stairs and down again. The corridors were empty now. Everyone was in class, and Felix was late.

Then a girl with a pile of books came round the corner. "Are you lost?" she asked. "I'm Sofia. I'm in Art too. I was at the library, so I'm late as well!"

They found Room 24 together. It was behind the music room, at the end of a small corridor. The teacher, Mr Adeyemi, just smiled. "Room 24 is our school's best secret," he said.

At lunch, Sofia waved at Felix. "Come and sit with us!" she called. Felix smiled. Maybe this school wasn't so bad after all.

  1. Which sentence best describes the story?

  2. Why didn't Felix know anyone at the school?

  3. Why was Sofia late for Art?

  4. Where was Room 24?

  5. Mr Adeyemi says, "Room 24 is our school's best secret." What does he mean?

  6. What does the end of the story show?
