Thanks for your email! I have some big news. My family and I are going to spend the summer in Portugal. We aren't going to stay in a hotel. We're going to rent a small house near the beach. We're going to travel there by car, and my dad is going to drive all the way, so the journey is going to be very long!

I'm going to take lots of photos, and my sister is going to learn to surf. I'm not going to try surfing because I'm afraid of big waves. I'm going to read on the beach and swim in the sea.

What about you? Are you going to visit your cousins in July? Write soon!

Priya

  1. Where is Priya's family going to stay?

  2. Who is going to learn to surf?

  3. Which sentence is true?

  4. Why is the journey going to be very long?

Notes for teachers

Use this test after introducing 'be going to' for plans and evidence-based predictions, or as a review before moving on to 'will'. It targets typical A2 errors: leaving out 'be', using 'do/does' in questions and negatives, adding -ing or -s after 'to', and confusing 'going to + verb' with 'going to + place'. As a follow-up, ask learners to write five sentences about their plans for next weekend and two predictions based on what they can see around them.
