Notes for teachers

Start with a timeline on the board. Mark a point in the future and contrast an action in progress at that point (will be doing) with an action finished before it (will have done). Learners often forget the -ing or past participle (will be wait, will have finish), and they mix up the two tenses after 'by'. Remind them that 'by' and 'by the time' usually signal the future perfect. As a follow-up, ask pairs to describe what they will be doing this time next year and what they will have achieved by then.
