Conditionnel présent formsIrregular stemsPolite requestsGiving adviceSi + imparfaitNegatives and questions

Notes for teachers

Start by reviewing the formation rule: future stem + imperfect endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient), and list the key irregular stems (ser-, aur-, fer-, ir-, pourr-, voudr-, devr-, viendr-, saur-, verr-, enverr-, faudr-). Typical mistakes include using the conditional after si (*si j'aurais*), confusing future and conditional endings (*je devrai* / *je devrais*), and inventing stems such as *pouvrais* or *voulerions*. As a follow-up, ask learners to write five sentences beginning 'Si j'étais…' or 'À ta place, je…' and share them in pairs.
