About this test

B2 French worksheet on the past conditional (conditionnel passé): form, si-clauses, regrets, reproaches, questions, negatives. Printable, with answers.

Topics covered

Conditionnel passéSi + plus-que-parfaitRegrets and reproachesAuxiliary choice and agreementNegatives and inversion questionsReported speech

Notes for teachers

Start by revising the plus-que-parfait, because learners need it for the si-clause. Then build the past conditional on the board as conditionnel présent of avoir/être + past participle. Watch for three typical mistakes: putting the conditional after si (*si j'aurais su*), using the wrong auxiliary with movement and reflexive verbs, and forgetting agreement with être. Learners also often write aurai instead of aurais. As a follow-up, ask students to write five sentences about their own regrets (J'aurais aimé… / J'aurais dû…) and to share them in pairs.
