C2 French worksheet on idioms and fixed expressions: meanings, key words, common errors, word forms and word order, with answers.
Start with the matching exercise so learners meet the meanings, then move on to the gap, correction and word-formation tasks. Learners often translate idioms literally from English or their first language, for example using 'mains' instead of 'pieds' in 'mettre les pieds dans le plat'. They also forget agreement in participial forms such as 'à bras ouverts' and 'lettre morte'. As a follow-up, ask pairs to write a short dialogue that naturally uses at least five of the expressions.
