Exercise 1: Match the nouns with their articles

Choose the correct article for each noun: der, die or das.

Example: Mann → der

Exercise 2: Complete the sentences

Write der, die or das in each gap.

Example: ___ Tisch ist neu. (der/die/das) → Der

  1. Frau heißt Anna. (der/die/das)

  2. Auto ist rot. (der/die/das)

  3. Kaffee ist heiß. (der/die/das)

  4. Wo ist Schlüssel? (der/die/das)

  5. Kinder spielen im Park. (der/die/das)

  6. Ist Wohnung groß? (der/die/das)

Exercise 3: First or second time?

Use ein/eine when you mention something for the first time and der/die/das when you mention it again. Fill the gaps with words from the box. Two words are extra.

Example: Hier ist ___ Stuhl. Der Stuhl ist bequem. → ein

  6. Das ist Tasche. Die Tasche ist neu.

Exercise 4: Make the sentences negative

Rewrite each sentence with kein or keine.

Example: Das ist ein Stuhl. → Das ist kein Stuhl.

  1. Das ist ein Tisch.

  2. Das ist eine Lampe.

  3. Das ist ein Handy.

  4. Hier ist eine Bank.

  5. Das sind Äpfel.

  6. Ich habe ein Auto.

Exercise 5: Find the mistake

Each sentence has one mistake with the article. Write the correct sentence.

Example: Der Buch ist gut. → Das Buch ist gut.

  1. Der Lampe ist neu.

  2. Das Tisch ist groß.

  3. Die Kind ist klein.

  4. Das ist kein Tasche.

  5. Der Mädchen heißt Lena.

  6. Das Bücher sind alt.

Exercise 6: Make questions

Put the words in the correct order to make a question.

Example: ist / Wo / die / Schule / ? → Wo ist die Schule?

Notes for teachers

Start with the matching exercise and encourage learners to learn every noun with its article, perhaps with colour coding (blue der, red die, green das). Typical mistakes: using der for every noun, forgetting that das Mädchen is neuter, and using kein instead of keine with feminine nouns. For follow-up, ask learners to label ten objects in the classroom with der, die or das and then ask each other questions like 'Ist das eine Lampe?'
