This worksheet helps A1 learners of German decide when to use nicht and when to use kein, keine or keinen. Learners practise negating nouns, verbs, adjectives and whole sentences, and they build negative questions. It works well in class and for self-study at home.

Printable A1 German worksheet on negation with nicht and kein: gap fills, a word box, transformations, error correction and word order, with answers.
Start by showing the basic rule. Use kein for nouns with ein/eine or no article. Use nicht for verbs, adjectives, names and nouns with the definite article or a possessive. Typical mistakes include "nicht ein" instead of kein and the wrong accusative form ("kein Tee" instead of "keinen Tee"). Learners also often place nicht before the object, as in "Ich verstehe nicht das". As a follow-up, learners can interview each other with "Hast du ...?" questions and answer with "Nein, ich habe kein/keine/keinen ...".
