This worksheet practises using German participles as adjectives: Partizip I (das weinende Kind) and Partizip II (das reparierte Auto), with the correct adjective endings. Learners compare active and passive meaning, build extended participial phrases from relative clauses and use them in negatives and questions. It is designed for B2 learners who already know the adjective declension.

B2 German worksheet: use present and past participles as adjectives, with correct endings, meaning contrasts and participial phrases.
Start by contrasting 'das kochende Wasser' (active, ongoing) with 'das gekochte Wasser' (passive or completed) before learners begin. Typical mistakes are forgetting the adjective ending (ein gestohlen Auto), mixing up Partizip I and II forms (gestrichende) and placing extra words outside the participial phrase. As a follow-up, ask learners to rewrite a short news article, turning relative clauses into participial attributes.
