C1 OriginalWorksheet
PDFTests Originals
This worksheet practises extended participle attributes (erweiterte Partizipialattribute), the compact noun phrases typical of formal and written German. Learners form Partizip I, Partizip II and zu + Partizip I with the correct adjective endings, and convert between relative clauses and participle constructions. It is designed for C1 learners preparing for academic or professional German.

C1 German worksheet on extended participle attributes: Partizip I and II, zu + Partizip I, adjective endings, negatives and questions, with answers.
Start by reviewing the meanings: Partizip I is active and simultaneous, Partizip II is usually passive or completed, and zu + Partizip I expresses necessity or possibility. Learners often use Partizip II where Partizip I is needed, as in 'die spielten Kinder'. They also forget the adjective ending or put the extension after the participle instead of between the article and the participle. As a follow-up, give learners a short newspaper or academic text and ask them to find participle attributes and unpack them into relative clauses.
