This worksheet helps advanced learners master common German idioms such as 'Tomaten auf den Augen haben' and 'um den heißen Brei herumreden'. Learners match idioms to their meanings, complete fixed phrases, use the right verb and adjective forms and correct typical errors. It suits C1 learners preparing for exams or working on more natural, idiomatic German.

Printable C1 German worksheet on idioms (Redewendungen): meanings, fixed collocations, verb forms and adjective endings, with answer key.
Start with Exercise 1 as a pair activity and ask learners to find English equivalents for each idiom. Learners often translate idioms literally or swap prepositions and articles, for example 'auf dem Kopf' instead of 'auf den Kopf' or 'in den Augen' instead of 'auf den Augen', so point out that idioms are fixed chunks. As a follow-up, ask learners to write a short dialogue or anecdote that uses at least five idioms from the worksheet.
