PDFTests Originals
This worksheet practises nominalisation (Nominalisierung) in German: forming nouns from verbs and adjectives and turning subordinate clauses into prepositional phrases typical of formal written style. It also covers negated nouns such as Nichtbeachtung and the nominalisation of indirect questions. It is designed for C1 learners preparing for academic or professional writing and exams.

C1 German worksheet on nominalisation: form nouns, use nominal-style prepositions and rewrite clauses, including negatives and questions.
Start with the word-formation exercise and review the main suffixes (-ung, -heit/-keit, nominalised infinitives, irregular nouns like Ankunft) before moving on to the rewriting tasks. Typical mistakes include wrong noun gender (der Ankunft), forgetting the genitive after trotz/wegen/während, writing nominalised infinitives in lower case, and using dative after seit incorrectly. As a follow-up, give learners a short informal email and ask them to rewrite it in formal nominal style, then discuss when nominal style becomes too heavy.
