This C1 worksheet practises French nominalisation: turning verbs and adjectives into nouns, choosing the correct suffix and gender, and rewriting clauses as noun phrases. It also covers negative ideas (absence de, manque de, in- prefixes) and questions. It suits advanced learners preparing for DALF, academic writing or professional French.

C1 French worksheet on nominalisation: form nouns from verbs and adjectives and rewrite sentences in a formal nominal style. Answers included.
Start with the word-formation exercise and pause on suffixes and genders: most -tion and -ure nouns are feminine, and most -ment nouns are masculine. Typical mistakes are invented forms such as *arrivement or *réfléchissement, wrong genders, and adding an article after manque de or absence de. As a follow-up, ask learners to turn a short news report into five headlines in nominal style, or to rewrite one of their own essays using more noun phrases.
