This C1 worksheet practises advanced uses of the French subjunctive: present and past forms, conjunctions such as bien que and à moins que, and the shift to the subjunctive in negative and inverted sentences. It also covers common traps such as après que, espérer and il est probable que. It suits advanced learners preparing for DALF C1 or polishing accurate written French.

C1 French worksheet on the advanced subjunctive: past subjunctive, conjunctions, negatives and questions, and indicative vs subjunctive. Printable PDF.
Start with Exercise 1 to check forms, especially irregular stems (puisse, fassiez, sache) and the choice of auxiliary in the past subjunctive. Learners often use the subjunctive after après que, espérer and il est probable que, and often confuse quoique with quoi que. Exercise 4 is a good basis for discussing these points. As a follow-up, ask learners to write a short argumentative paragraph using at least five subjunctive triggers from the worksheet.
