About this test

Printable A1 German worksheet on separable verbs (trennbare Verben): word order, questions, negatives and modal verbs, with answers.

Topics covered

Separable verbsPresent tenseWord orderQuestions and negativesModal verbs + infinitive

Notes for teachers

Start by showing that the prefix goes to the very end of the sentence, like a bracket around the middle part. Common mistakes are keeping the verb together (Ich aufstehe), putting the prefix too early (Der Zug kommt an um elf), and forgetting vowel changes (fängt, siehst). As a follow-up, learners can write their own daily routine with five separable verbs and then interview a partner using yes/no questions.
