Exercise 1: ne or n'?

Complete each sentence with ne or n'.

Example: Il ___ travaille pas le lundi. → ne

  5. Ils écoutent pas la radio.

Exercise 2: Make it negative

Rewrite each sentence in the negative with ne … pas.

Example: Je danse. → Je ne danse pas.

  1. Je suis étudiant.

  2. Elle parle français.

  3. Nous aimons le football.

  4. Tu habites ici.

  5. Ils travaillent le samedi.

  6. Paul est content.

  7. Vous écoutez le professeur.

Exercise 3: Articles after a negative

Complete the sentences with a word from the box. You can use a word more than once. Two words are not needed.

Exercise 4: Find the mistake

Each sentence has one mistake. Write the correct sentence.

Example: Je ne mange viande pas. → Je ne mange pas de viande.

  4. Il mange pas à la cantine.

Exercise 5: Put the words in order

Put the words in the correct order to make negative sentences.

Example: pas / je / ne / chante → Je ne chante pas.

Notes for teachers

Start by writing a positive sentence on the board and showing how ne and pas 'sandwich' the verb. Typical mistakes are putting pas after the object, forgetting the elision (ne aime), keeping un/une/des after a negative, and wrongly using de after aimer. As a follow-up, ask pairs to interview each other with yes/no questions and answer only with full negative sentences.
