Notes for teachers

Start by showing how the imparfait is formed: take the nous form of the present, remove -ons and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Être is the only irregular stem (ét-). Common mistakes include forgetting the e in mangeais or the ç in commençait, mixing up -ais and -ait, and adding -ions to the nous stem twice. As a follow-up, ask learners to write five sentences about their childhood beginning with "Quand j'étais petit(e)…".
